Check the speedo cable where is screws into the crankcase. If the seal is shot or the knurled cap is loose the speedo cable will splatter those areas. Otherwise, ride it awhile and the accumulated road dirt will leave a trail to the culprit.

Normal.. If they are too loud, adjust them.

20w-50 is okay. Either Castrol 20w-50 petroleum blend, or Mobil-1 15w-50 synthetic will keep the motor happy.

Isn't the standard procedure to back out the low-speed mixture screw for max revs, then close 1/8th?
